Unconventional? Not in the Carmon family. Four years before Amit's Bat Mitzvah, her older sister Noam did the same thing, celebrating her Bat Mitzvah at Yad Sarah after hearing about the possibilities of volunteer work at school.
It was at Noam's Bat Mitzvah that Amit decided, and announced publicly, that she would begin collecting money for the purchase of medical equipment at Yad Sarah, where she too, would have her Bat Mitzvah.
Racheli, the proud mother of Noam and Amit, tells about her children's unique decisions:
"When we came home from Noam's Bat Mitzvah, Amit asked me for a shoe box. On the box she wrote, "I am raising money for Yad Sarah." This became a charity box which later appeared at every family event, when Amit would go around among the guests, collecting for her chosen goal. Everybody joined in the worthy effort of the little "schnorer."
Four years have passed since then, during which Amit collected 1,500 NIS (about $400). At her Bat Mitzvah at Yad Sarah she presented her "collection" towards the purchase of an oxygen tank, a wheelchair, and a walker.
Shilo, the younger brother of Noam and Amit, is already collecting. After all, this is a family tradition.
The Yad Sarah family congratulates Amit on the occasion, and on her unique way of celebrating her Bat Mitzvah. Mazal Tov!
Yad Sarah needs more celebrations like this! Every contribution, small or large, is dear to us and important to us. These contributions enable us to provide our services to the 400,000 families that are aided by Yad Sarah, annually.
